Grand Bahamas - H2O Bonefishing

WCO Premier Destination - H2O Bonefishing Grand Bahamas

WCO has spent a lot of time fishing the flats of The Bahamas, Belize, Mexico and The Seychelles. We have our favorite places and they are our favorites for different reasons. Our overall favorite Bonefish destination is a clear #1. We like BIG Bonefish and nowhere else in the western hemisphere are there more big Bonefish than there are at GRand Bahamas. If you don't believe us take a look at the research, it proves there are more big Bonefish around Grand Bahamas than anywhere else in the Carribean.

Our friend and business partner in our Chile operations is none other than Greg Vincent, 3 time winner of the Del Brown Permit Tournament. Greg and his partner at H2O is Jason Franklin one of the best flats guides we have ever fished with. The guides that work for H2O Bonefishing have been trained by Greg and Jason and are some of the best flats guides we have fished with anywhere. They are professional, polite and good anglers in their own right.

The fishery is a unique, varied and expansive. There are several attributes of the Grand Bahamas fishery that make it special. It also produces some very large Bonefish, the likes we have not seen anywhere else. If fishing to a large single Bonefish of 10 pounds is your dream situation then there are few other places to make that dream come true. Grand Bahamas is the only place we have found where it is a legitimate expectation to see and fish to double digit Bonefish.

WCO Hosted Trip - Grand Bahamas

The Fishing

The fishing is of course why WCO goes to Grand Bahamas so often. We have a close relationship with Greg Vincent and Jason Franklin but that is not why we go so often. We have caught Bonefish most everywhere but we have never and I mean never seen as many BIG Bonefish as we have seen on Grand Bahamas. It is the only place we feel confident telling an angler that they will see a 10 pound Bonefish. Catching them is another thing but anglers will see the largest Bonefish in the Western Hemisphere and the guides will absoutely put in you in position. Catching those trophy Bonefish is then really up to you.

The flats are expansive and within this large flats system, that surrounds Grand Bahamas, there is one of the longest uninterrupted mangroves in the western hemisphere. This creates a tremendous area for juvenile Bonefish to hide and for forage to flourish. This along with superior Bonefish genetics grows some very large Bonefish. These are not like Keys Bonefish these Bonefish are more than willing to eat and as long as you do things right they will eat the fly.

The Permit fishing is better than most areas of the Bahamas and with higher tides in October and November the numbers of Permit are really good. There are always Permit around and we have caught them at various times during the season, we do however really like the fall fishing because of the higher tides. The high tides tend to show us some really big Bonefish as well. the only issue is that with the high tides the Bonefish can get way up into the mangroves.

There are also Tarpon at different times and we have had some success with fish in the 50 to 60 pound range. The average size of the bonefish, 4 to 5 lbs, is impressive and is an added attraction for many of our anglers who are used to seeing 2 to 3 pound Bonefish most everywhere else, Angelrs regularly catch fish in the 7-8 pound range and of course there are those anglers that will tangle with double digit bonefish that would be described as trophy fish no matter where in the world they were caught. The club record bonefish on fly tipped the scales at 14 1/2 pounds before release ! While the size of the bones has impressed many anglers it has also been the quantity of fish that have had many anglers returning year after year.

Fishing - No Boundaries Program

No Boundaries is a program developed by Greg and Jason that gives the angler interested in fishing the wilderness area across Little Bahama Bank the opportunity to see some truly gargantuan fish. H2O has a large 21 foot flats boats specifically designed to make the run across Little Bahama Bank to an area we can only call No Boundaries. The No Boundaries program was born out of their passion as guides and fisherman to continue to explore and develop the world class fly fishing opportunities Grand Bahama has to offer. The new program utilizes a larger 21 foot custom flats boat designed not only to travel further and faster in more comfort but also to target a wider verity of species on the fly. Unique in the Bahamas the program offers clients the possibilities to fish the more remote areas of little Bahama bank and to allow anglers to experience several known as well as not so well known fisheries from one location. The program is available during the months of June and July to take advantage of the great summer fishing and encompasses a two day experience of our excellent local program coupled with two days of No Boundaries. However the program is easily customized to individual client requests.

Other Species

Permit are available on the flats from spring through the summer months. While the Grand Bahamas fishery cannot be considered a dedicated permit fishery, many of our anglers enjoy the opportunity to cast to them while Bonefishing and the team at h20 Bonefishing strongly suggest anglers have a permit set up rigged and ready to go at all times during this period. Tarpon are also available as an addition to the Bonefish and permit however this great game fish must be targeted and their peak season is from May to September. Barracuda are prevalent on the flats year round as are several species of sharks – bonnet head, lemon shark, black tip and reef sharks are the most common. During spring and summer mutton snappers are also available on certain flats and can be targeted by those anglers wanting to add this wary and powerful game fish to their list of accomplishments. A very unique fishery is also available here for triggerfish found tailing on certain flats. In addition to the more consistent availability of the game fish mentioned above there can also be opportunities at packs of horse eye jacks and some large jack crevalle, both of which will come from deeper water onto the flats to hunt. The Lodging

Clients of H2O Bonefishing stay at Pelican Bay Resort at Port Lacaya. Each of H2O BONEFISHING guests are provided a beautiful waterfront room with their Bonefishing package. Two separate packages are available to include either a one bedroom suite or deluxe room. Each room can be furnished with a choice of 2 beds for sharing fishing partners or a very spacious King option for couples or single anglers. Cot beds are also available for families as well as pull out sofa bed options for the suites. Satellite TV, direct dial phone, refrigerator and in-room coffee maker. Also available is a business center and wireless internet access for all our guests.

The new one-bedroom suites offer an upscale rooming option with lush tropical gardens and varying color-scheme. Mahogany wood and beautifully appointed custom decor highlight each of the spacious one bedroom suites. Although our anglers will experience the fishery as a very remote and undisturbed one, this cannot be said for their lodging which is perfectly located allowing all our anglers immediate access to the Islands top restaurants and myriad activities and amenities found within a short walk of their room. Should non angling activities for wives and/or family be a consideration then you will find it very hard to even match this programs ability to cater to them while knowing there will be zero compromise to the quality of your flats fishing.

The Food

Breakfast can be eaten there at the resort, there is a nice breakfast area in the new expansion at the resort. Lunch is provided on the water and is a nice box lunch with sandwiches on homemade bread with chips, fruit and a cookie. You are on your own for dinner and trust us that is a good thing. There are some terrific places to eat there in Freeport and two in particular are favorites of ours. Cappuccino is a terrific Italian place as well as Sabor at the hotel, really good seafood! There are other places there as well Greg and Jason can point your towards.
